American Planning Association Award
June 19, 2003
Costa Mesa, CA…The contributions of BonTerra Consulting to the San Diego Creek Watershed Natural Treatment System (NTS) Project-Irvine Ranch Water District were recently praised as the NTS Master Plan and comprehensive Environmental Impact Report (EIR) was given an “Award of Merit: Comprehensive Planning Award Large Jurisdiction” by the Orange County Section of the American Planning Association (OC APA). “The APA wanted to recognize the efforts of the Irvine Ranch Water District for their innovation and commitment to improve the environmental integrity of our communities.” BonTerra Consulting is proud to have been responsible for preparing the EIR.
The Natural Treatment System is a cost effective, environmentally sound alternative for handling low flows (e.g. dry weather runoff and runoff from small rainstorms). Low-flow natural and urban runoff, as well as smaller storm flows will be diverted into man-made wetlands throughout the San Diego Creek Watershed to remove contaminants and prevent them from reaching the Upper Newport Bay. At the same time the system will provide natural resources, riparian habitat, wildlife and water quality benefits throughout the watershed.
The judges felt that “the plan is outstanding” and that “This project was interesting and exciting.” The panel congratulated the Irvine Ranch Water District for this accomplishment and for being recognized as a “Leader in outstanding program and water quality methods.”
